Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is the adventure of a lifetime. But the wrong gear can ruin it. Uganda’s rainforest is wet, muddy, steep, and full of stinging nettles.  In this guide, Semu Gorilla Safaris breaks down exactly what to pack for gorilla trekking in 2026. We’ve taken clients to Bwindi, so we know what works. From waterproof boots to documents, we cover clothes, gear, and what NOT to bring. Plus grab our free printable packing list PDF at the end to tick items off.

Essential Clothing for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi 2026

Bwindi is a rainforest at 2,600m altitude. That means mud, nettles, rain, and cold mornings. Cotton kills. You need technical gear.

  • 1. Long Sleeve Quick-Dry Shirts – 2x Minimum
Why: Protection from stinging nettles, thorns, and insects. Choose neutral colors: olive, brown, khaki. Avoid white – it gets muddy in 5 minutes. Avoid red/orange – it can agitate gorillas. Brands like Columbia or Patagonia work great.

  • 2. Convertible Hiking Pants – 2x Pairs
Why: Long pants are mandatory. The undergrowth will cut your legs. Convertible pants that zip to shorts are perfect for hot afternoons in Kampala. Tuck pants into socks to keep safari ants out. Look for water-resistant fabric.

  • 3. Waterproof Rain Jacket + Poncho
Why: It rains 200 days a year in Bwindi. A lightweight Gore-Tex jacket is best. A cheap poncho also works and covers your backpack. Morning treks are cold, so layer this over a fleece.

  • 4. Waterproof Hiking Boots – Broken In
Why: This is the #1 item. Ankle support is critical for muddy, rooty, steep trails. Waterproof + aggressive tread. Do NOT wear new boots. Break them in 3 weeks before. Salomon and Merrell are ranger favorites.

  • 5. Gaiters – Highly Recommended
Why: $15 that saves your whole trek. Gaiters stop mud, water, stones, and ants from going into your boots. Essential in wet season March-May and Oct-Nov.

  • 6. Hiking Socks + Glove Hack
Why: Pack 3 pairs of thick merino wool socks. Wet feet = blisters. Pro tip from our guides: wear a pair of thin garden gloves OVER your socks under your pants. It creates a thorn-proof barrier around your ankles.

Gear + Accessories You Must Bring for 2026

  • 1. 20-30L Daypack with Rain Cover
Why: You’ll carry water, camera, jacket, and lunch. Must have chest and waist straps. Osprey or Deuter are best. The rain cover is non-negotiable. No plastic bags allowed in Uganda.

  • 2. 2L of Water + Hydration System
Why: Treks are 2-6 hours. Dehydration at altitude is real. Bring 2x 1L bottles or a 2L hydration bladder. We provide refill water at the lodge. Add electrolyte tablets.

  • 3. High-Energy Snacks
Why: You’ll burn 2000+ calories. Pack energy bars, trail mix, glucose sweets, and a banana for after. No food is allowed during the 1 hour with gorillas.

  • 4. Camera + Dry Bag + Extra Batteries
Why: No flash. No tripods. A 70-200mm zoom is perfect. Batteries die fast in cold. Put everything in a dry bag or ziplock. The humidity will fog lenses.

  • 5. Trekking Poles or Walking Stick
Why: The #1 reason people fall. UWA porters sell sturdy wooden sticks for $15 at the trailhead. Or bring collapsible poles. Your knees will thank you on the way down.

  • 6. Binoculars + Hat + Sunglasses
Why: 8×42 binoculars are perfect for birds and distant gorillas. A wide-brim hat for sun at clearings. Polarized sunglasses for the drive. Pack a buff to cover dust on the road.

Health, Safety and Documents Checklist for Uganda 2026

  • 1. Gorilla Permit + Passport Copy
Why: Original $800 UWA permit printed. We at Semu Gorilla Safaris email it 60 days before. Also bring your passport – it must be valid 6+ months. No permit, no gorillas.

  • 2. Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate
Why: 100% mandatory to enter Uganda. Immigration and park rangers will ask. Get it 10 days before travel. Keep the yellow booklet with your passport.

  • 3. Travel Insurance + Emergency Contacts
Why: Must cover hiking and evacuation. Bwindi is remote. Share your itinerary with someone. We provide 24/7 WhatsApp support and driver-guide radio.

  • 4. Insect Repellent + Anti-Malaria
Why: DEET 30-50% for tsetse flies and mosquitoes. Talk to your doctor about malaria pills. The forest has biting insects even in dry season.

  • 5. First Aid Kit + Personal Medications
Why: Pack plasters, antiseptic, painkillers, anti-diarrhea, and antihistamine. Bring all prescriptions. Diamox for altitude if needed. Porters carry a basic kit too.

  • 6. Sunscreen SPF 50 + Lip Balm
Why: UV is strong at altitude, even under trees. You’ll get sunburned in 30 minutes at a clearing. SPF 50 and SPF lip balm are essential.

What NOT to Pack for Gorilla Trekking - UWA Rules

Bwindi is a UNESCO site. Rangers are strict. Break rules = fines or no trek.

  • 1. No Bright Colors
Why: Red, bright blue, orange can stress gorillas. Stick to earth tones. Also no white – it shows every mud stain.
    2. No Food to Feed Gorillas
Why: Feeding wildlife is illegal and dangerous. Eat all snacks before the 1 hour starts. Wash hands with sanitizer after.
    3. No Drones, Tripods, or Flash
Why: Banned by UWA. They stress the gorillas. Camera must be handheld. Phones on silent.
    4. No Plastic Bags or Single-Use Plastic
Why: Uganda banned plastics in 2019. Use reusable dry bags and water bottles. Rangers check bags at the gate.
    5. No Sandals, Crocs, or New Shoes
Why: Too dangerous. You need ankle support and grip. Also don’t bring jeans – they weigh 3kg when wet.
    6. No Large Luggage on Trek Day
Why: Leave big bags at your lodge. Only take a daypack. Too much luggage slows the group and attracts ants.
