Quick Answer For Busy Travelers
How difficult is gorilla trekking? It is easier than you think.
This is a slow, guided forest walk – not a mountain climb. About 40% of our guests finish in 1-2 hours (easy), 40% in 3-4 hours (moderate), and only 20% take 5-6 hours when gorillas are far. If you can walk for a few hours at a gentle pace with breaks, you can do it. Advanced trackers find the gorillas at dawn and radio your ranger, so you walk straight to them. Porters and sedan chairs are available to make it comfortable for everyone.
Trekking mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the highlight of any trip to Uganda. And yes – every traveler asks us the same first question: “Will I manage it? How difficult is gorilla trekking really?”
At Semu Gorilla Safaris and Tours we have guided guests of all ages and fitness levels – from 20-year-olds to 72-year-olds, first-time hikers to experienced trekkers. Our honest answer: it is manageable for average fitness. You are not searching the whole forest on your own. Our ranger teams do the hard work early morning.
Why it feels easier with Semu: Private 4x4 Land Cruiser takes you to the trailhead (no long village walks), lodges just 2 minutes from briefing point so you start fresh, free walking sticks, and help to hire a local porter at briefing. Most guests tell us afterward: “It was challenging, but absolutely doable – and worth every step.”
The biggest factor for difficulty is which sector you trek in. Think of Bwindi like four different parks:
Buhoma – flattest, best trails, easiest for beginners & families | Rushaga & Ruhija – gentle hills, moderate, most gorilla families | Nkuringo – steep, most challenging, but best views
In this guide we share real trek times from our last season, who should hire a porter, what to wear to make it easy, and how we help you get the easiest sector permit when available.
Click to see which gorilla families live in each sector – helps you decide difficulty vs experience:
Buhoma Families – EASIEST
Muyaga, Habinyanja, Katwe → 1-2hr trek

Rushaga Families – MODERATE
Nshongi, Bweza, Mishaya → 2-4hr trek

If you can do these, you can trek gorillas in Bwindi:
Hire a Porter – Highly Recommended for Everyone
Local porter carries your daypack, pushes you on hills, pulls you up. Cost is small, helps community, makes trek 50% easier. Even fit guests hire porter. Semu includes help to book porter at briefing.
Sedan Chair – For Elderly / Knee Problems
Carried by 4 strong porters + 2 extra to pull. You still get 1 hour with gorillas. Need to book in advance. Tell us early if you need sedan chair and we arrange it in Buhoma sector.
Right gear makes difficult trek become easy. Wrong shoes = hard trek.
| Item | Why It Matters for Difficulty |
|---|---|
| Waterproof hiking boots | Ankle support on muddy roots – prevents slipping |
| Gaiters | Keeps mud & ants out – ranger will ask for them |
| Garden gloves | Grab branches on steep parts – very helpful |
| Long pants & long sleeves | Protection from nettles |
| 2L water + snacks | Energy on long trek |
Full Checklist with Brand Recommendations
We prepared a complete packing list – what to wear, what NOT to bring, camera gear allowed, hired items at briefing point.

Not very difficult. Trekking is a slow guided walk, not hiking. Rangers track gorillas before you start, so you walk directly to them. About 40% of treks are easy (1-2 hours). Beginners should request Buhoma sector which is flattest and hire a porter.
Minimum age is 15 years in both Bwindi and Volcanoes National Park. No maximum age – we regularly guide guests over 60 and 70 using porters and sedan chairs. If you can walk with support, you can trek.
Easier than most mountain hikes because pace is very slow with many stops. Difficulty is mainly mud and small hills, not distance. Walking stick and porter make it much easier than normal hiking.
Yes. Elderly guests choose Buhoma sector, hire a porter, and request a nearby gorilla family. For guests with knee problems, we book a sedan chair carried by 4 porters. Contact us in advance to arrange.
Nkuringo is at higher altitude and requires steep descent into valley in morning and steep climb back in afternoon. Views are best but it is physically demanding. Only recommended for fit trekkers. See gorilla families in Nkuringo if you are fit.
