7 Safety Tips for Bwindi Gorilla Trekking in 2026-2027 (From Rangers on Ground)

  1. 1. Always Book Private 4x4 With Experienced Driver: Bwindi roads are murram, muddy and steep. We use only pre-checked Land Cruisers with two spare tires and drivers who know Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors well. Avoid public buses or late departures. Your driver stays at same lodge compound overnight, so you have 24/7 support and you travel in daytime only.
  2. 2. Hire a Porter Even If You Are Fit ($20-$25): Bwindi sits at 1160m to 2600m, trails are steep, slippery and muddy especially in March-May and Oct-Nov rains. A local porter carries your backpack, gives you a hand on slopes and knows shortcut roots. It is also community support – porters are former hunters turned conservationists. For solo female travelers, this is extra stability and confidence. You can book at briefing point, cash only.
  3. 3. Wear Proper Trekking Gear – Not Fashion: Rangers will not allow sandals. You need waterproof hiking boots with ankle grip, long thick pants, long sleeved shirt, garden gloves to hold vines, and lightweight rain jacket. Bwindi is rainforest – it rains even in dry season. Carry 2 liters water, energy bar and gloves. We send full packing list after booking.
  4. 4. Follow Ranger Instructions Strictly – 7 Meter Rule: Every trek has 2 armed UWA rangers (front and back), plus 2 trackers who go ahead at 5am to find gorilla nests. You will be in group of 8 maximum. Keep 7 meters from gorillas, no flash photography, crouch if silverback bluff-charges (it is display, not attack). Rangers have radio contact to HQ and army patrols. Zero tourist incident since 1993 because this system works.
  5. 5. Choose a Lodge With Real Security, Not Just View: Ask if lodge has 24/7 askari guards, locked private bandas with hot shower inside, solar lights and female staff for solo female. In all 4 sectors we work with lodges that have all this – your driver sleeps at same lodge. Avoid camping or homestays deep in village with no gate. Your lodge manager walks you to banda at night.
  6. 6. Carry Cash, Copies and Altitude Insurance: No ATMs in Bwindi. Bring $300-$400 cash for porter, tips and emergency boda. Keep passport copy on phone and hard copy in different bag. Your travel insurance must cover trekking up to 3000m and emergency evacuation – normal travel insurance does not. We check this before you travel.
  7. 7. Ask For Female Guide or Private Trek on Request: For solo female travelers, we can arrange female guide and private trek where available. All our guides are licensed, trained and speak English. You get door-to-door pickup, briefing assistance and private banda drop. It is safer and more comfortable than joining unknown groups.

FAQs – Is Bwindi Safe in 2026-2027?

Is Bwindi safe for solo female travelers?

Yes. You never trek alone. You join 7 other tourists with 2 armed UWA rangers. Lodges have 24/7 guards, locked bandas and female staff. We also provide female guides on request and your driver stays at same lodge. Zero incidents reported for solo females since 1993.

Is gorilla trekking safe? What if gorilla charges?

Gorilla trekking is safe. Gorillas are habituated for 2-3 years to see humans. A silverback may do a bluff charge as display – rangers tell you to crouch, avoid eye contact and stay calm. Rangers carry guns for wild animals like elephants, not gorillas. Follow 7 meter rule and no flash.

Is it safe near Congo border?

Yes. Bwindi sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo) are 10-30km from DRC border but heavily patrolled by UPDF army and UWA. Tourism zones are far from conflict areas. Rangers have radio and military backup. US and UK travel advisories list Bwindi as safe for tourism.

What are real risks in Bwindi?

Real risks are not gorillas. They are muddy steep trails, altitude 1160-2600m causing fatigue, insects and rain. That is why you need hiking boots, porter, 2L water and rain jacket. Book in dry season June-September and Dec-Feb for easier trails.

Do I need a guard or can I trek alone?

You cannot trek alone – it is illegal. All treks include 2 armed rangers and trackers. Park HQ tracks you by radio. This is for your safety against wild forest elephants and to protect gorillas. Porter is optional but highly recommended for $20-$25.
