Bwindi is not a park. It’s a feeling.
Located in southwest Uganda, about 8-10 hours drive from Entebbe, Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to almost half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. 459 gorillas live here across 4 sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo.
The name “Impenetrable” wasn’t given for nothing. The forest is dense, ancient, and misty. The trees are 100+ feet tall. Vines hang down. The air smells like earth and leaves. You walk in single file with 7 other people, 2 armed rangers, and a tracker who’s been following gorilla dung since 6am.
The Gorilla Trekking Experience:
You start at 7:30am with a briefing. Rangers assign you to a gorilla family based on your fitness level. Some families are 45 minutes away. Others are 4 hours uphill.
When the tracker radios “we have them,” your heart stops. You’ll be told to crouch. And then you see them. A 400lb silverback eating. A baby riding on mom’s back. A juvenile playing.
You get exactly 1 hour. No more. The rangers enforce it. But 1 hour with gorillas feels longer than a day. They look you in the eye. They’re curious about you too. It’s not like a zoo. It’s mutual.

If Bwindi is church, Kibale is a playground.
Kibale Forest National Park is in western Uganda, about 5-6 hours from Entebbe. It’s easier to reach and often combined with Queen Elizabeth National Park for lions and chimps in one trip.

Starts 8am or 2pm. Groups of 8. You walk 1-3 hours to find a chimp community. Once found, you get 1 hour. Chimps are active. They’re pant-hooting, fighting, grooming, swinging. It’s loud and chaotic in the best way. You’ll see babies, alpha males, and maybe tool use.
Option 2: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience – $300
This is Kibale’s secret weapon. Starts 6am. You spend 4 hours with researchers as they get the chimps used to humans. You watch them wake up, build nests, hunt, and play. You see the full range of behavior. Limited to 6 people. Book 6 months ahead.
The forest itself is different from Bwindi. Lower altitude, less mud, more light coming through. You’ll also see red colobus, L’Hoest’s monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, and tons of birds.
This is where most people get confused. They think “primate is primate.” It’s not.

Rainy Seasons: March to May and October to November
