About Kidepo Valley National Park: Uganda's True Wilderness
Kidepo Valley National Park covers 1,442 km² in Karamoja region, bordering South Sudan and Kenya. It was gazetted in 1962 and reopened in 1992.
What makes Kidepo safaris unique is the isolation. You drive through Karamoja, see traditional Manyatta homesteads, and arrive in a landscape that looks like the Serengeti. The park has 2 valleys: Narus and Kidepo.
Kidepo has 86 mammal species, 28 of which are not found anywhere else in Uganda. This includes cheetah, caracal, aardwolf, bat-eared fox, and greater kudu. It’s also the best place in Uganda to see lions and cheetahs.
Most kidepo valley tours are 3-4 days because of the long drive. Combine with Sipi Falls or Jinja for a complete northern circuit.

Option 1: By Road - 10 to 12 Hours
This is the most adventurous way to do a kidepo valley trip. The drive shows you real Uganda.
- From Kampala: 700km via Gulu, Kitgum, and Kaabong. Takes 10-12 hours in a 4x4. We break the journey with an overnight in Gulu or Kitgum.
- From Murchison Falls: 8-9 hours via Gulu. Great to combine both parks.
- Road Condition: Tarmac to Gulu, then murram. A 4x4 with pop-roof is mandatory.
Pros: See Karamoja culture, Manyatta homesteads, and landscapes. Cheaper.
Cons: Long drive. Takes 2 days to get there and back.
