Planning your Uganda gorilla safari for 2027-2028 and stuck between flying into Kigali or Entebbe?
Here is the short answer: For Bwindi and Mgahinga gorilla trekking, fly to Kigali.
Kigali (KGL) is only 4.5 hours to Bwindi vs 9.5+ hours from Entebbe (EBB). That saves you 1 full day + $300 in fuel and hotel costs in 2027-2028. Full price breakdown on our Uganda gorilla safari cost guide.
But Entebbe is still better if you are adding Murchison Falls or Kibale Chimp trekking. Check total Uganda gorilla safari cost for 2027-2028 to see package prices from $1,150 to $4,800.
In this guide, I compare both routes on driving time, total cost, visa, flights, and border crossing, so you pick the right airport for your 2027-2028 safari. Need quick help? WhatsApp us +256771026496.

Key Insight for 2027-2028: If you land in Kigali at 8am with RwandAir or Qatar Airways, you reach Bwindi by 2pm and can relax before trekking next day. From Entebbe, you lose one full day and must pay for an extra hotel night in Kampala (approx $120-$180). This is why we recommend Kigali for 2-day and 3-day gorilla safaris.
Many people think Entebbe is cheaper because it's in Uganda. For 2027-2028, Kigali is actually cheaper for Bwindi gorilla trekking.
| Cost Item | Via Kigali | Via Entebbe |
|---|---|---|
| Gorilla Permit 2027-2028 | $800 per person (Uganda) - Same | |
| Fuel & Driver (Bwindi return) | $250 - $300 | $450 - $550 |
| Extra Hotel Night En Route | $0 (Same day arrival) | $120 - $180 in Kampala/Mbarara |
| East Africa Visa | $100 per person (covers Rwanda + Uganda) | |
| Total Transport Saving | Save $300 to $400 via Kigali | More expensive for Bwindi only |
No. For 2027-2028, use the $100 East Africa Tourist Visa. One visa covers Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya for 90 days. Apply online before travel.
Important: Request it as East Africa Visa when applying. If you apply for only Rwanda $50 visa, you will have to buy Uganda visa again at Katuna border for $50. So always buy the $100 East Africa Visa first if you land in Kigali and trek in Uganda.
The border is safe and very used by tourists in 2027-2028. Over 70% of Bwindi tourists now use Kigali route.
Fly to Entebbe if your itinerary includes more than just gorillas:
If you are doing only Bwindi + Mgahinga + Lake Bunyonyi for 2-4 days, Kigali wins for 2027-2028.
Our Recommendation for 2027-2028:
If your main goal is mountain gorillas in Bwindi or Mgahinga, FLY TO KIGALI. You save 10 hours driving, save $300+, and you start trekking fresher. If your trip is a full Uganda safari with chimps and Murchison, fly to Entebbe.
Both routes use the same $800 gorilla permit. Transport is the only difference.
