What Does the $1500 Rwanda Gorilla Permit Include?
Your $1500 is not just a paper. You meet at Kinigi park headquarters at 7am sharp for coffee, briefing and traditional dance. Rangers divide you into groups of 8 based on fitness – Sabyinyo for easy, Susa for tough hike. That’s included.
Then you drive to the trailhead and trek 1 to 4 hours through bamboo forest with one ranger, two trackers and one armed guard. They radioed the gorilla family location at 6am, so you will find them. When you see that silverback staring at you from 7 meters, everything else stops.
You get exactly 1 hour. No more. Rangers time it. You can take photos without flash, sit, watch them eat, babies play, mother groom. If you are lucky, Susa family has 33 gorillas – you’ll see chaos. After 60 minutes they pull you back, even if you beg. That’s RDB rule.

Rwanda has only 12 habituated gorilla families in Volcanoes. 12 families x 8 visitors = 96 permits. That’s it for the whole country. They don’t add more even when demand explodes. That’s why July was sold out by March this year.
RDB does this to protect gorillas. Too many humans stress them and bring disease. A gorilla cold can kill a baby. That’s why you wear a mask when you get close. It’s not COVID theater, it’s real protection. Your $1500 pays for vets.

Rwanda vs Uganda Gorilla Permit – Should You Pay $1500 or $800?
Uganda is $800, Rwanda is $1500. Almost double. So why people still choose Rwanda? Two reasons – time and ease. From Kigali airport to Volcanoes is 2.5 hours on tarmac. You can land at 10am and trek next morning. Uganda is 9 hours drive from Entebbe to Bwindi Forest, or you add a $350 flight.
Rwanda trek is shorter. Most families are 1-2 hours to find, Uganda can be 5 hours in thick forest. If you are 55+, have knee issue, or traveling with kids 15+, Rwanda is kinder. Lodges in Kinigi are also nicer – Bisate, One&Only, Singita – if you want luxury.
Gorilla experience is same. Same mountain gorillas, same 1 hour, same 7 meters distance. Some say Uganda gorillas have more babies because families larger. True, but Rwanda’s Susa and Igisha families are also 30+ members. No big difference in sighting.

$1500 is only permit. You still need transport. Kigali to Volcanoes private 4×4 with driver is $200 return for 2 days. If you are solo, we share you with other trekkers to cut cost to $80. Fuel in Rwanda is expensive now.

You need a porter $15. Take him even if you are fit. He carries bag, pulls you on slippery bamboo, and your $15 feeds his family. Rwanda visa $50 at Kigali airport on arrival for most nationalities. And tips $20 for ranger if trek good.
