This permit is set by Uganda Wildlife Authority, UWA. Every tour operator in Uganda pays the same $800. If someone is quoting you less, they’re not including the permit. If someone is quoting you more, they’re adding their own markup. That’s why we put it right here at the top.
So what does the $800 actually get you? You get 1 hour with a wild mountain gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. You’ll hike with an armed ranger guide for anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours to find them. Then you get that full hour watching them eat, play, and interact. No extra fees once you’re in the forest. Cameras are allowed, no flash.
Permits are limited to 8 people per gorilla family, per day. That’s why they sell out 6 to 12 months in advance, especially for June to September and December to February. For 2026, we recommend booking your permit as soon as you lock your dates. We secure them the moment you pay a 30% deposit. Once it’s booked under your name and passport, it’s yours.
A few important notes: the minimum age to trek is 15 years. You need to be reasonably fit because Bwindi is hilly and muddy. 1 Day Gorilla Trek from Kigali: From$1100-The Fastest Way to Gorillas
If you’re short on time but still want gorillas, the 1 Day Gorilla Trek from Kigali $1100 is our most popular option. This is for travelers flying into Kigali, Rwanda who only have 1 day to spare.
Here’s how it works. We pick you up from Kigali Airport or your hotel at 4:00 AM. It’s a 4 to 5 hour drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, crossing the border into Uganda. We handle the border, the paperwork, and the logistics so you don’t have to think about it. You’ll have breakfast on the road.
Once we reach Bwindi, you’ll join other trekkers for a briefing at the park headquarters at 8:00 AM. Your ranger will assign you a gorilla family, and then the trek begins. Depending on where the gorillas nested the night before, the hike can take 30 minutes or up to 4 hours. It’s steep, but that’s part of the adventure. Porters are available for $20.
When you find the gorillas, you get 1 full hour with them. Just you, 7 other people, and a wild gorilla family. After that hour, we head straight back to the vehicle and drive back to Kigali. You’ll arrive at your hotel or the airport around 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM. It’s a long day, but worth every minute.

The forest is dense, muddy, and steep. That’s why we provide walking sticks and can arrange a porter for $20.
Then comes the moment. 1 full hour with a wild mountain gorilla family. Watching babies play, silverbacks feeding, and the whole family interact 10 feet away from you. No fences. No zoos. Just wild. After the trek you head back to the lodge. Most guests spend the afternoon by the pool or doing a short village walk to meet the Batwa community.
Day 3 is flexible. If you’re flying out, we drive you back to Entebbe for an evening flight. If you have more time, we can add Lake Bunyonyi for canoeing or a second gorilla trek. Most people choose to head back because they’ve got flights to catch, but the option is there.

Day 1: Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park
We pick you up from Entebbe or Kampala and drive 6 hours north to Murchison Falls. This is Uganda’s largest park and home to giraffes, elephants, buffalo, and the famous Nile. You’ll check into your lodge and do an evening game drive. Expect lions, antelope, and sunset over the savanna.
Day 2: Game Drive + Boat Cruise on the Nile
Wake up early for a game drive on the northern bank. This is the best time to spot lions, leopards, and large herds. In the afternoon we do the 3-hour boat cruise to the base of Murchison Falls. You’ll see hippos, crocodiles, and hundreds of birds. Optional hike to the top of the falls if you’re up for it.
Day 3: Drive to Kibale Forest – Chimp Trekking Tomorrow
Today is a travel day. We drive 7 hours south to Kibale National Park, known as the Primate Capital of the World. You’ll arrive in the evening. Kibale has 13 primate species and the best chimp tracking in Africa.
Day 4: Chimpanzee Tracking + Drive to Queen Elizabeth
After breakfast we head to the forest for chimp tracking. The hike is 2 to 4 hours and once you find them, you get 1 hour with the chimps. They’re loud, active, and fun to watch. After lunch we drive 3 hours to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Evening arrival.
Day 5: Queen Elizabeth Game Drive + Boat Cruise
Morning game drive in the Kasenyi plains. This is your best shot at lions, elephants, and Uganda kobs. In the afternoon we take the boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel. It connects Lake George and Lake Edward and has one of the highest concentrations of hippos in the world. You’ll also see buffalo and birds right on the shore.
Day 6: Drive to Bwindi – Gorilla Trek Prep
We drive 4 hours through the Ishasha sector famous for tree-climbing lions. If we’re lucky we spot them in fig trees. You’ll arrive in Bwindi in the afternoon, check in, and rest. Your ranger will brief you for tomorrow’s gorilla trek.
Day 7: Gorilla Trekking + Return to Kampala/Entebbe
Early morning gorilla trek in Bwindi. Same process: briefing, 1-4 hour hike, 1 hour with gorillas. After the trek we drive 8-9 hours back to Kampala or Entebbe for your evening flight. It’s a long day but you end with gorillas fresh in your mind.

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe + Ziwa Rhino Tracking
We pick you up and drive 3 hours north to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Uganda’s only place to see rhinos in the wild. You’ll track them on foot, then continue to Murchison Falls. Evening arrival.

Day 6: Kazinga Channel Boat + Ishasha Tree Lions
Morning boat cruise on Kazinga Channel with hippos and buffalo. After lunch we drive to Ishasha sector. This is the only place in Uganda to see tree-climbing lions.
Day 7: Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Scenic drive through the hills to Bwindi. You’ll pass terraced farms and local villages. Afternoon rest before your gorilla trek.
Day 8: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
The big day. Early briefing, then 1-4 hour trek to find gorillas. 1 full hour with them. After, you can do a Batwa cultural experience or just relax at the lodge.
Day 9: Lake Bunyonyi + Drive to Lake Mburo
We drive out of Bwindi and stop at Lake Bunyonyi for canoeing and views. Then continue to Lake Mburo National Park. Evening game drive for zebras and impalas.
Day 10: Horseback Safari or Walking Safari + Jinja + Departure
Morning activity in Lake Mburo. Then drive to Jinja, the source of the Nile. Option for white water rafting or just a photo at the Nile. We drop you at Entebbe for your evening flight.

Best Time for Uganda Safari: Dry Season vs Wet Season 2026
Uganda is a year-round safari destination. But the best time depends on what you care about most: easy trekking, wildlife viewing, or price.
The Dry Seasons: June to September and December to February
This is peak season and the best time for most travelers in 2026. Trails in Bwindi and Kibale are less muddy, so gorilla trekking and chimp trekking are easier. In Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth, animals gather at waterholes, so game drives are amazing. Expect clear skies and great photos.
The trade-off? This is also when demand is highest. 2026 gorilla permits sell out 6-12 months in advance and mid-range + luxury lodges cost more. Book early if you want June, July, August, or December.
The Wet Seasons: March to May and October to November
This is “green season” and the secret best time for budget travelers. The parks are lush, birds are everywhere, and you’ll have Bwindi almost to yourself. Gorilla trekking still happens every day. The trek can be 30-60 minutes longer because of mud, but you get the same 1 hour with the gorillas.
The big win: lower lodge rates. Many lodges drop prices by 20-30%. You can often get a $3,800 10-day safari down to $3,400 in April or November. Flights are also cheaper.
What about gorillas and chimps?
You can trek gorillas and chimps 365 days a year. UWA doesn’t close Bwindi or Kibale. The only difference is the trail conditions. If mobility is a concern, aim for the dry months. If you want fewer people and better photos of green forest, go in the wet months.
