Rwanda gorilla safari costs from $2,000 per person for 2 days and $2,500 for 3 days in 2026-2027. The gorilla permit itself is $1500 – fixed by Rwanda Development Board for everyone. Why Is Rwanda So Expensive? ($1500 Permit Explained)
The $1500 is not our price. It’s set by Rwanda Development Board for every tour operator, every tourist, no discounts. We buy it from the government office in Kigali and give you the receipt. Out of that $1500, 10% goes directly to villages around Volcanoes National Park – schools, water, roads. Another chunk funds rangers and vets. That’s why you see healthy gorillas here.
Rwanda decided to be expensive on purpose. In 2017 they doubled from $750 to $1500 to say “we are luxury, low volume”. Uganda kept theirs at $800. Strategy worked. Rwanda now gets fewer tourists but more dollars per tourist, and gorillas are less stressed. Only 96 permits per day for 12 families. That scarcity keeps the price high.
You cannot negotiate it. If someone offers you $800 permit in Rwanda, it’s a scam or they are booking you in Uganda’s Bwindi and driving 9 hours. The RDB system is online – we log in, check your passport name, pay $1500, you get QR code. At Kinigi briefing at 7am, they scan it. No QR, no trek.
Is it worth it? Our clients say yes after the hour. You sit 7 meters from a 200kg silverback, babies playing on his back, no fence. That moment cost $1500 to protect for 30 years. The $220 we add for car, lodge and guide is actually where we make our small margin.
Cost by Days – 2 Days vs 3 Days vs 5 Days
2 Days – $2,000 pp sharing – Cheapest legal way. Day 1: Kigali to Musanze 2.5 hrs, sleep. Day 2: trek 6am-2pm, drive back to Kigali for your flight at 6pm. You save one hotel night. Good if you have only a weekend. Hard if your flight lands late – you will need extra Kigali hotel $100.
3 Days – $2,500 pp – Our best seller and best value. Day 1: Kigali city tour, Genocide Memorial, market. Day 2: drive to Musanze, relax at lodge. Day 3: gorilla trek, return to Kigali. You are rested for trek, you see Rwanda, and if your trek is tough you have buffer. Solo traveler pays $3,200 because car cost isn’t shared.
5 Days – $4,500 pp – Gorillas + Golden Monkeys + Akagera Big 5. This is where Rwanda becomes a full safari. Day 1-3 same as above, Day 4: golden monkey trek ($100 permit), Day 5: Akagera game drive – elephants, lions reintroduced in 2015. Transport goes up to $650 because Akagera is far. Lodges 4 nights mid-range $1000.
7 Days Luxury – $5,800+ pp. This uses Bisate or Sabyinyo at $1,400 per night. Same $1500 permit, but lodge is 70% of cost. You get private conservancy, fireplaces, 1:1 staff. For honeymoon, clients pay it. For most, mid-range at $200+ per night is clean, hot shower, good food – you are only sleeping there.
Budget vs Mid-range vs Luxury – Real Lodge Prices (2026)
Budget $90-150/night – Muhabura Hotel, Fatima, Home Inn in Musanze town. Clean, hot water sometimes, simple breakfast. Shared bathroom in some. You walk 15 mins to town for dinner. Works for backpackers. Total trip becomes $1,720 pp if you accept budget. We still use same 4×4 and guide – safety doesn’t drop.
Mid-range $280-450/night – Da Vinci Lodge, Garden Place, Le Bambou, Ingagi Park View. This is our default. Private en-suite, fireplace, 10 mins from park gate. Good food – we include it. You meet other trekkers at bar, exchange family names. 80% of our clients choose this. Price I quoted $2,000 uses this tier.
Luxury $550-1,500/night – Bisate Lodge , Sabyinyo , Virunga Lodge, One&Onl. Bisate is owned by Wilderness – 6 villas in crater, best wine list. Sabyinyo is community owned – profits go to trust. If you stay luxury, your total 3-day jumps to $3,800-$4,500 pp because lodge dominates. Permit still same $1500.
Our advice as local: pick mid-range unless it’s honeymoon. You are in lodge only 8 hours to sleep. Gorillas are same for budget and luxury clients – same forest, same hour, same ranger. Spend on extra trek (golden monkeys) rather than $1000 bed.
Hidden Costs Most Websites Don't Tell You
Porter – $15-20 mandatory if you want one. Not included by many operators but we include it. Porter carries bag and pulls you on mud. They are ex-poachers now employed – worth it. Tip $5 extra if he saves you from falling.
Tipping – Ranger $10 per group, guide $20 per day per car, lodge staff $10. Not forced, but expected. Budget $50 total.
Kigali hotel – If you land after 3pm, you cannot drive to Musanze same day (park closes). You need Kigali night $80-120 at Onomo or Chez Lando. Our 3-day includes it, 2-day does not. Many forget this.
Clothes rental – Waterproof pants, gaiters, hiking boots. We lend free at our office if you tell us size before. Other operators charge $30. If you come in sneakers in April, you will slip and twist.
Flight – Kigali (KGL) from USA $900-1300, Europe $600-800. Not in safari cost. Fly RwandAir – they allow date change free if gorillas move.
