Lake Mburo National Park: Africa's Closest Walking Safari to Kampala
Only park with zebras and impalas you can walk with. 5,000 zebras, 69 mammals, 332 birds, 5 lakes – all in Uganda's smallest savanna park, just 3.5 hours from Entebbe and Kampala. Our 4x4 Land Cruiser with pop-up roof leaves from Kampala/Entebbe daily – Equator stop at Kayabwe, game drive with impala and eland only found here, 2-hour boat cruise with hippos at arm's length, and walking safari with UWA armed ranger.

About Lake Mburo National Park – Uganda's Walking Safari Park Closest to Kampala
Lake Mburo National Park is Uganda's smallest savanna park at 370km², but it punches far above its size. Gazetted in 1983 from Ankole cattle corridor, it sits 228km (3.5hrs) from Kampala along the Masaka-Mbarara highway, making it the only savanna park you can reach on a smooth tarmac road without a full day's drive. The park is built around 5 permanent lakes – Lake Mburo (13km long), Lake Kachera, Kazuma, Bwera and Kachira – plus 20% permanent swamp, which means animals never have to migrate. In the peak dry months of June-September and December-February, when Murchison Falls National Park gets dusty and Queen Elizabeth National Park channels get crowded, Mburo's waterholes pull 5,000 Burchell's zebra, 1,500 eland (Africa's largest antelope), 1,200 impala, 700 buffalo, 50+ Rothschild giraffe reintroduced in 2015, Defassa waterbuck, topi, oribi, reedbuck and leopard to open acacia savanna where you can see for kilometers.
Why Lake Mburo is the only park you can walk in: Unlike Queen Elizabeth and Murchison which have resident elephants and lions inside, Lake Mburo has no elephants and only transient lions. That single ecological fact changes everything. Uganda Wildlife Authority allows 4 activities here that are banned in every other western park: 1) Walking safari with armed ranger $30 per person for 2-3hrs – you track zebra on foot, within 10-15 meters. 2) Horseback safari $75 per hour at Mihingo Lodge – canter alongside impala herds, no engine noise. 3) Quad biking $60 per hour on ranch trails outside Nshara Gate. 4) Mountain biking inside park tracks $30. Add the classic game drive in 4x4 pop-up roof (best 6:30-10AM and 4-6:30PM) and the 2-hour boat cruise on Lake Mburo $30pp – hippos, crocodiles, African fish eagle, malachite kingfisher at oar's length – and you have 6 different ways to see the same park in one day.
History and name: Kampala itself is named after this park. The Baganda called the hill with many impala – Kasozi ka Mpala – and the British corrupted it to Kampala. The impala you see here, with its glossy chestnut coat, lives nowhere else in Uganda. Same with zebra – western Uganda has no zebra except Lake Mburo, because tsetse fly wiped them out elsewhere. Conservation success: from 3,000 zebra in 2005 to over 5,000 in 2025 census. Giraffe translocation from Murchison in 2015 was 50% survival success, now breeding. Bird count is 332 species – papyrus gonolek, shoebill in Masha swamp, African finfoot, brown-chested lapwing (only place in Uganda to see it easily).
Location advantage for 2027-2028 safaris: Entebbe 260km / 4-4.5hrs, Kampala 228km / 3.5hrs, Kigali 420km / 7-8hrs via Katuna/Gatuna border, all on tarmac. Equator monument at Kayabwe 77km from Kampala – mandatory stop for photos, craft shops and experiments. This proximity makes Lake Mburo the strategic break. For Bwindi gorillas, the drive from Kampala is 9-10hrs nonstop. 90% of our clients sleep in Mburo night before/after – Kampala > Mburo 3.5hrs > Bwindi 5hrs next morning. You arrive fresh for gorilla trek, not exhausted. Same for Queen Elizabeth: Mburo > Queen 5hrs via Mbarara-Bushenyi. For Murchison Falls, we route Mburo > Ziwa Rhino > Murchison to avoid backtracking to Kampala – saves 200km fuel.
What to expect on a day: Gates open 6:30AM at Nshara and Sanga. Entry $40 Foreign Non-Resident, $30 Foreign Resident, UGX 20,000 East African, valid 24hrs. Vehicle UGX 20k-30k. Morning game drive 2.5hrs on Ruroko and Kazuma tracks – zebra, impala, giraffe, buffalo. 10AM walking safari 2hrs with ranger – learn dung, tracks, acacia medicine. 1PM lunch at Eagles Nest lodge overlooking lake. 2PM boat 2hrs – 300 hippos in Lake Mburo alone, plus crocs. 4:30PM horseback or evening drive for leopard. Night drive $30pp 7-9PM for hyena, bushbaby, white-tailed mongoose. Accommodation: budget Eagles Nest $90, mid Rwakobo Rock $180 with infinity pool over savanna, luxury Mihingo Lodge $350 – all outside park but 5-10 mins to gate. Camping UWA $10pp at Rwonyo.

Activities and Things to Do in Lake Mburo National Park – Full Guide 2027-2028
Lake Mburo is the only park in western Uganda where you can do 6 different safari activities in 24 hours. No elephants inside means Uganda Wildlife Authority allows walking, horseback, biking and quad – all banned in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls. Gates open 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM at Nshara (Mbarara side) and Sanga (Masaka side). Entry 40 dollars Foreign Non-Resident, valid 24 hours.
This is why people choose Lake Mburo over Queen Elizabeth for the first night. In Queen Elizabeth you must stay in the vehicle because lions and elephants are inside. In Mburo there are no elephants and lions are transient from ranches. UWA allows you to leave the car. You walk with an armed ranger on Ruroko Track and Kazuma Lookout. Distance 3-5 km at slow pace. You learn to read fresh zebra dung, identify eland tracks versus topi, smell buffalo, taste acacia leaves that giraffe eat, and spot hyena den. The moment you get within 10-15 meters of a herd of 50 zebra and impala mixed – without an engine – is the highlight. Photography is better because you are at eye level. You need closed shoes, long trousers, hat. Ranger carries rifle but never uses it. Group size max 6. Book at Rwonyo HQ by 6:30 AM for morning slot – only 2 groups per time to keep it wild. Children 12 plus allowed.
Mihingo Lodge keeps 12 horses – thoroughbred cross Ankole. No experience needed, they match horse to rider weight and skill. You ride on the edge of park and inside along Warukiri Hills. Because you are on a horse, not a vehicle, zebra and impala see you as another 4-legged animal and let you come within 20 meters. You can trot through acacia savanna, over termite mounds, with 360 degree view. Morning 8:00-11:00 AM when animals active, or 4:00-6:00 PM for golden light. Helmets provided. Weight limit 90 kg. This activity is banned in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison because elephants attack horses. In Mburo it has 100 percent safety record since 2015. Best for couples and photographers who want no roof bars in photo. Combine with walking same day – horse morning, walk evening.
Lake Mburo itself is 13 km long, papyrus edges, center 3 meters deep. Boat is small 9-seater with roof, quiet 15 hp engine. You glide past 300 hippos in pods of 20 – they yawn, fight, spray water. Nile crocodiles 3-4 meters long sunbathe on banks. Bird list from boat: African fish eagle calls every 200 meters, malachite kingfisher orange and blue at eye level, pied kingfisher hovering, white-winged warbler in papyrus. The extension to Masha swamp is where shoebill lives – boat pushes into reeds, 10 percent chance but best chance in Uganda outside Mabamba. Fishermen in dugouts, Ankole cattle drinking at edge. Morning light best for photos, evening best for hippo out of water. Compared to Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth which is wide and 30 boats at a time, here you are often the only boat. Life jackets provided, safe for children 5 plus.
Ruroko loop for zebra and giraffe, Kazuma for buffalo and topi, Lakeside Track for warthog and bushbuck. Road network 150 km, murram, good in dry, slippery in rains March-May. Land Cruiser with pop-up roof lets you stand. Because park is only 370 km2 and open acacia, you see 30-50 animals per hour without searching for hours like Murchison. Only 30-40 vehicles per day, no traffic jams. Guide uses radio for leopard sighting.
Only night drive allowed in western Uganda outside Queen Elizabeth's Kasenyi. Uses red spotlight. Success: leopard 40 percent in Rubanga forest, hyena 70 percent heard and 50 percent seen, bushbaby eyes glowing, white-tailed mongoose, porcupine, genet, nightjar. Two vehicles only per night to reduce disturbance. Cold at night – bring jacket. Photography difficult, better for experience.
Mountain biking – 30 dollars per person with ranger escort, 2-3 hours on park tracks, mountain bike provided at Rwonyo or bring yours. Good fitness needed, murram and some sand. Quad biking – 60 dollars per hour on community ranch outside Nshara Gate – ride through Ankole long-horned cattle ranches, villages, not inside park. Sport fishing – tilapia and lungfish in Lake Mburo, catch and release, 40 dollars with local fisherman. Cultural visit to Ankole ranch – 20 dollars per person – milk cows, ghee making, see 2-meter horn cattle, visit Banyankole homestead. All can be added to same day if you stay 2 days 1 night.
