Both parks require you to be reasonably fit, but Rwanda trek is easier. Volcanoes National Park is bamboo forest on the slopes of volcanoes. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest lives up to its name. It is truly impenetrable, thick jungle, steep hills, vines, and mud when it rains. Trek is 2 to 5 hours each way depending on which gorilla family you get. You go up and down ridges. It is harder, but also more wild and jungle-like. If you love hiking and real forest adventure, you will love Uganda more. Our guides carry walking sticks free, and porter $20 helps you greatly.
RDB and UWA both allow you to request easy, medium, or hard based on fitness at briefing at 7am. In Rwanda it works very well. In Uganda it works but families move overnight so even an easy request can become medium. We always tell UWA we have elderly to get closer families when possible.

Photography is slightly easier in Rwanda because forest is lighter bamboo, more light comes in, and gorillas often in more open areas. Bwindi is darker, denser, more challenging for auto-focus. But Bwindi photos look more jungle wild. We advise bring 70-200mm lens, no flash, and we teach you settings at briefing. Both parks give equal time.
Behavior wise, gorillas move daily. Some days Rwanda families are on steep slopes too. Some days Bwindi families are near lodge, 30 minutes away. It is luck. Our trackers go out at 5am, so we know roughly where they are before you start.
