Uganda Gorilla Permit Prices 2026-2027

Official Uganda Wildlife Authority gorilla trekking permit rates for Bwindi and Mgahinga. Book early, permits are limited.

The Price. A Uganda gorilla permit costs $800 USD per person per trek for foreign non-residents in 2026. This price is set by Uganda Wildlife Authority UWA and is non-negotiable. The permit allows you 1 full hour with a habituated gorilla family, plus time with rangers and trackers. It is the single biggest cost of any Uganda gorilla safari.

 What’s Included
Your gorilla permit covers park entrance fees, ranger guide fees, and conservation fees. It does not include accommodation, transport, or meals, which are all included in our Uganda safari packages. East African citizens and residents pay 300,000 UGX, while foreign residents pay $700 USD. Children under 15 are not allowed to trek.

Why Book Early
Only 96 gorilla permits are available per day across Bwindi and Mgahinga. Because demand is high, permits for June to September and December often sell out 6 months in advance. We recommend booking as soon as you have travel dates. Once you pay a deposit, Semu Gorilla Safaris guarantees your permit. Bwindi vs Mgahinga Gorilla Trekking

Bwindi Overview
Most travelers choose Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for their Uganda gorilla safari. Bwindi is home to almost half of the world’s mountain gorillas, with 20 habituated families spread across 4 sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. This means more permit availability and different hiking experiences. Buhoma is easiest to access, while Rushaga and Nkuringo have shorter treks.

Mgahinga Overview
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is smaller and has just 1 habituated gorilla family: the Nyakagezi group. The advantage of Mgahinga is that it’s less crowded and offers a more exclusive trek. It’s also the only place in Uganda where you can do golden monkey trekking on the same trip. The park sits in the Virunga Mountains and offers stunning volcano views.

 Trek Difficulty & Experience
Bwindi treks can take 2 to 6 hours depending on the sector and gorilla location. Terrain is steep and forested. Mgahinga treks are often shorter, 2 to 4 hours, but can be steep due to the volcanic slopes. Both parks require a moderate fitness level. Porters are available for hire at both parks to help with bags.

Which Should You Choose
Choose Bwindi if you want more date options, varied sectors, and a classic Uganda gorilla safari experience. Choose Mgahinga if you want a quieter trek and plan to combine it with golden monkeys or Rwanda. At Semu Gorilla Safaris, we advise you based on availability, budget, and fitness. Both parks guarantee the same 1-hour gorilla encounter.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Dry Seasons
The best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the two dry seasons: June to September and December to February. During these months, the hiking trails in Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks are drier and less muddy. This makes trekking easier, especially for travelers who prefer a shorter, less strenuous hike to see mountain gorillas. The skies are also clearer, which is perfect for photography.

Wet Seasons
Gorilla trekking in Uganda is available year-round, and the wet seasons of March to May and October to November have their own advantages. The parks are less crowded, so you get a more private experience with your gorilla family. Lodges also offer discounted rates during these months, making it the best time for budget travelers. The forest is lush, green, and full of life, though you should expect some rain and muddy trails.

Wildlife + Weather Combo
If you are combining your Uganda gorilla safari with wildlife safaris, the dry seasons are also best. Animals in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls gather around water sources, making game drives and boat cruises easier. For chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, dry weather means better forest conditions and higher chances of seeing chimps quickly.

Booking Tip
Regardless of when you travel, book your Uganda gorilla safari 6-12 months in advance. Uganda Wildlife Authority only issues 8 permits per gorilla group daily, and dry season dates sell out fast. At Semu Gorilla Safaris, we monitor permit availability daily and secure your permit once you confirm.

Unforgettable Gorilla Trekking Experiences in Uganda & Rwanda

Bwindi Gorilla Trekking, Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is the heart of gorilla tourism in Africa. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to almost half of all remaining mountain gorillas — over 400 individuals spread across 20+ habituated families.

Treks here are true adventures. You’ll hike through dense jungle, cross steep ridges, and follow your ranger as they track fresh gorilla signs. When you find them, you get 1 full hour to observe them feeding, grooming, and playing.

Bwindi is perfect for travelers who want a real rainforest experience. We offer treks in Ruhija, Buhoma, Rushaga, and Nkuringo sectors. Each sector has different gorilla families and difficulty levels, so we match you to the right one.

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda offers a different kind of gorilla trek. The Volcanoes National Park sits in the Virunga Mountains and is known for shorter, more accessible treks and luxury lodges.

The scenery is breathtaking. You’ll walk through bamboo forests with views of 5 volcanoes while searching for gorillas. Rwanda’s gorillas are well-habituated and sightings are very consistent.

Choose Rwanda if you want a premium, shorter safari or if you’re flying into Kigali. Many of our guests combine Rwanda gorillas with Uganda wildlife for the best of both countries in one trip.

Licensed Expert Guides

Our guides are certified by the Uganda Tourism Board and trained in wildlife, safety, and conservation. They don’t just lead the trek — they tell the story of the forest, the gorillas, and the local communities.

With years of experience, they know how to find gorillas quickly and keep your group safe and comfortable. Many of our guides have worked in Bwindi for 10+ years and are respected by rangers and trackers.

You’ll get honest advice, local insights, and photos to remember your trip. That’s the Semu difference.

👥 Small Group Safaris in 4x4 Land Cruisers

We keep our safari groups to a maximum of 50 guests across all tours, with only 5 people per customized safari Land Cruiser. This means more window seats, better views, and more comfort on every game drive.

Small groups mean less noise, more flexibility, and a deeper connection with nature and the gorillas. You won’t feel rushed. You’ll have space to ask questions, take photos, and enjoy quiet moments in the forest.

This is why 90% of our guests leave us 5-star reviews on Google and TripAdvisor.

Great guide - amazing experience! We completed a 1 day Gorilla trek from Kigali, Rwanda to Bwindi NP. It was an early start but well worth it! Jimmy, our driver was fantastic, a lovely, friendly man who answered any questions we had.

Brandon

Professional and very accommodating, with a great depth of knowledge about MFNP My three day Murchison Falls NP adventure with guide Jimmy was an incredible few days seeing so much wildlife, as well as the fantastic falls on the Victoria Nile. His knowledge of the area, and where the animals would be, meant we saw a large number of lions, elephants, giraffes, antelope, monkeys and many different bird species. His professionalism and reliability, as well as flexibility in the program to optimize opportunities and time available, made it a memorable and action packed few days. I would highly recommend Jimmy and Semu Gorilla Safaris and Tours to make the most of a visit to MFNP
