About Queen Elizabeth National Park - The Wild Heart of Uganda

Uganda's Most Diverse National Park - 1,978 SQ KM - UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Since 1979

Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda's most visited savannah park and the most biodiverse protected area in all of Africa, spanning 1,978 square kilometers in Western Uganda between Lake Edward and Lake George. Located 380km southwest of Entebbe and 495km from Kigali, the park straddles the equator at Kasese District (0°12'S 30°05'E), bordered by Kibale National Park to the northeast, Rwenzori Mountains to the northwest, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest 160km south, and Democratic Republic of Congo's Virunga National Park to the west. Elevation ranges from 910m at Lake Edward to 1,390m at explosion crater rim, creating temperature 18°C - 28°C and rainfall 700mm-1,400mm.

Gazetted in 1952 as Kazinga National Park and renamed in 1954 to honor Queen Elizabeth II after her historic visit, Queen Elizabeth National Park has survived poaching in the 1970s-80s to become Uganda's conservation success story. In 1979 UNESCO designated it a Biosphere Reserve for its unique link between savannah, forest, wetlands and crater lakes. In 2027 it remains the only park in Uganda where you can see tree-climbing lions in Ishasha, do a Kazinga Channel boat cruise with 600+ hippos, track chimpanzees in Kyambura Gorge, and see Big 4 game (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo) in one 2-day safari from just $480 per person.

Geography: 5 Habitats in 1 Park - Why It Has More Animals

Unlike Murchison or Kidepo which are one habitat, Queen Elizabeth compresses five ecosystems within 40km: (1) Open Savannah Grassland in Kasenyi Plains covering 40% of park - short grass maintained by 20,000+ Uganda kobs and fire regime, perfect for lion hunts; (2) Dense Tropical Forest in Kyambura Gorge 100m deep and Maramagambo Forest 270 sq km with bat caves; (3) Wetlands & Kazinga Channel 32km natural waterway linking Lake George (250 sq km) to Lake Edward (2,325 sq km) - world's largest hippo concentration; (4) Explosion Crater Lakes - 10 craters from volcanic explosion 8,000-10,000 years ago including Katwe Salt Lake where Uganda's oldest salt mining since 14th century, Bunyaruguru 20 craters with twin lakes Katinda & Mirambi, and Nyamunuka with flamingos; (5) Acacia Woodland & Ishasha Riverine Forest in south with giant fig trees where lions climb. This mosaic supports 95 mammal species, 10 primates, 612 bird species (highest in East Africa), 54 reptiles and 40 butterfly species.

4 Sectors You Must Know For Your Safari Planning

1. Kasenyi Plains & Mweya Peninsula - The Classic Game Drive Zone (North)

This is the heart of safari activity, 15 minutes from Mweya Safari Lodge. Kasenyi Track 12km loop is where Uganda Wildlife Authority conducts daily lion monitoring. You find lion prides of 8-12, solitary leopards on Euphorbia trees, 2,500 elephants migrating between Kibale and Queen, 8,000 buffaloes in herds of 200, hyenas, warthogs, and Uganda's largest kob lek - 20,000 kobs performing mating dance June-Sept. Best drives: 6:30-9:30AM when lions hunt, 4:00-6:30PM for golden light. Lion sighting rate 85% with UWA guide $20. Connected to Mweya Peninsula where Mweya Lodge sits overlooking Kazinga Channel - best sunset spot.

2. Ishasha Sector - Home of Tree-Climbing Lions (South - 1.5hrs from Mweya)

Ishasha is 60% of park area but remote - only 2 lodges and 800 sq km wilderness bordering Kigali. Famous worldwide for tree-climbing lions lounging in giant sycamore fig trees - behavior only seen here and Lake Manyara Tanzania. Why do they climb? To escape heat, tsetse flies, and see kob prey. Population ~40 lions in 4 prides. Chance of sighting: 70% if you overnight, 50% day trip. Best trees: Near Ishasha River Camp. Besides lions, you see topi (only here in this park), giant forest hogs largest wild pig, shoebill in swamp. Distance: 95km from Katunguru gate 2hrs rough road. Smart route: Start safari from Kigali - Kigali to Ishasha 3.5hrs vs Entebbe to Ishasha 9hrs. We offer 3-day Ishasha focused package $750 per person including tree-climbing lions guarantee re-drive.

3. Kazinga Channel & Lake Edward System - Boat Safari Capital (Central)

The 32km Kazinga Channel is the park's lifeline connecting Lake George in east (average depth 2.4m) to Lake Edward in west (depth 112m). Formed 10,000 years ago by lava damming. UWA boat cruise operates 4 times daily 9AM, 11AM, 2PM, 3PM - 2hrs $30 FNR. It holds world's densest hippo population - 2,800 hippos in channel = 600 per sq km, plus Nile crocodiles up to 5m, elephants bathing in families of 30, buffaloes swimming. Birders paradise: 60 waterbird species per cruise including pink-backed pelican, African skimmer, great white pelican, shoebill sometimes. Mweya boat jetty is start point. Private boat $300 for photographers. Channel banks also have natural salt licks where animals drink.

4. Kyambura Gorge & Maramagambo Forest - Chimpanzee Trekking & Bats (East)

Kyambura Gorge is a 100m deep, 1km long rift valley gorge carved by River Kyambura, now called Valley of Apes. It shelters 24 chimpanzees habituated since 2008, isolated from main forest 12km away. Trek $100 FNR, $80 FR, UGX 80,000 EAC - only 16 permits/day, 8AM and 1PM shifts, 2-4hrs trek including 1hr with chimps. Success rate 60% low season because chimps range far, 85% in fruit season June-Aug. Besides chimps: black & white colobus, red-tailed monkeys, olive baboons, otters. Nearby Maramagambo Forest 270 sq km is one of Uganda's largest forests with bat cave housing 50,000 bats and African rock python 6m long that eats bats. Guided forest walk $30. This sector connects to crater lakes drive.

Why Queen Elizabeth Beats Other Savannah Parks in 2027:
Unlike Serengeti or Masai Mara which require $1,500+ fly-in, Queen Elizabeth offers Big 4 for $480 including 4x4 car & guide - 70% cheaper. Unlike Lake Mburo which has no lions, you get lions plus tree-climbing lions plus boat safari plus chimps in 2-3 days without domestic flights. Its location between Kibale (chimps) and Bwindi (gorillas) makes it perfect mid-point for 7-day primate + savannah circuit: Entebbe → Kibale → Queen → Bwindi → back. Crater lakes, salt mining at Katwe where you meet local women miners, and equator monument add cultural depth no other park has. For birders, 612 species vs 530 in Murchison, with Albertine Rift endemics like Rwenzori Turaco.

1. Game Drive in Kasenyi Plains & Mweya Peninsula - The Heart of Queen Elizabeth Safari

Elephants in Queen Elizabeth National Park Kasenyi plains game drive herd

Kasenyi Plains is where 90% of all game drives happen. This 12km Kasenyi Track plus Mweya Peninsula loop and Katwe road circuit is open savannah with short grass maintained by fire and 20,000+ Uganda kobs grazing. What you see: Resident lion prides 8-12 individuals studied by Uganda Carnivore Program since 2005, leopard resting on giant candelabra Euphorbia trees during day, 2,500 elephants migrating between Kibale Forest and Queen Elizabeth, 8,000 buffaloes in herds up to 200, spotted hyenas, warthogs, giant forest hogs near Katwe, waterbucks, bushbucks and Uganda kob lek where males display for females June-September.

Midday 11AM-3PM animals hide - avoid. Drive is 3-4hrs in 4x4 Land Cruiser with pop-up roof. You must have UWA ranger guide $20 per vehicle per drive highly recommended - they know lion dens and radio call each other. Lion sighting success 85% with guide vs 50% without. Entry covered by park fee $40. Vehicle fee $10 per day. For photographers, request to leave at 6:00AM to be first on track. In rainy season Mar-May and Oct-Nov track muddy - need 4x4.

2. Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise - World's Highest Hippo Concentration

The 32km Kazinga Channel connects Lake George (250 sq km, average depth 2.4m) to Lake Edward (2,325 sq km, depth 112m). Formed 10,000 years ago when lava from Katwe craters dammed river flow. UWA operates 2hr boat cruise 4 times daily 9AM, 11AM, 2PM, 3PM from Mweya jetty. This is Queen Elizabeth's number 1 highlight. Channel holds 2,800 hippos - 600 per sq km - highest density on earth, plus Nile crocodiles 4-5m long, elephants swimming across channel in families of 30 with babies, buffaloes swimming, monitor lizards.

Best cruise 3PM for soft light and elephants coming to drink. Morning 9AM good for birders. 3. Tree-Climbing Lions in Ishasha Sector - Only Place in Uganda

Ishasha Sector covers 800 sq km in southern Queen Elizabeth bordering Kigali road and DRC. This remote wilderness has only 2 lodges (Ishasha Wilderness Camp and Ishasha Jungle Lodge) and is famous worldwide for tree-climbing lions - lions that spend day sleeping on branches of giant sycamore fig trees. Behavior only seen here and Lake Manyara Tanzania. Scientists think they climb to escape heat on ground 35°C, avoid tsetse flies and see kob prey in tall grass. Population ~40 lions in 4 prides tracked by collars.

Safari Planning: Ishasha is 95km from Katunguru gate, 1.5-2hrs rough murram road from Mweya. Day trip possible but 5hrs driving total - exhausting. Best overnight in Ishasha and do evening and morning drives - increases sighting to 70% vs 50% day trip. Best trees near Ishasha River and near Ishasha Wilderness Camp junction. Best time 8-10AM when lions still in trees before descending to hunt, and 5-6PM when climbing up. Also see topi antelope - only in Ishasha within this park, giant forest hogs largest wild pig 150kg, and shoebill in swamp. Pro tip: Start safari from Kigali - Kigali to Ishasha 3.5hrs via Cyanika border vs Entebbe to Ishasha 9hrs - saves full day. Our 3-day Ishasha $750 package includes 2 game drives in Ishasha with guarantee re-drive if no lions seen.

Combine morning tracking + afternoon normal game drive + night drive for ultimate big cat day - we call it Big Cat Trilogy $210 extra.
